Arthur Kemp has written a most lucid and compact history of the world as seen through the racial perspective. It is worth reading once - or several times if one would like to experience a very satisfying sweep of history (about 1200 pages on CD). Kemp writes from a non Christian view, with some ideas difficult or impossible for Christians to accept. The Bible introduces Adam as the progenitor of all peoples and the New Testament states that God has made "...of one blood" all humans. Kemp questions this (and Christianity) and interprets history as a story of racial distinctions and their consequences. Kemp is not an evolutionist, though the most recent theories of Darwinian Evolution hold that man is, in fact, the product of many origins: life springing up in strains similar but totally independent of each other with gene pools that do not overlap. Of course the Bible presents history as the story of God's special cration and that creature's (man) knowledge of and attitude toward the one true and living - and loving God. Borrowing an image from Kemp's history of his own South Africa (most powerful, graphic and moving) I might encapsulate his view: One can see all of mankind, billions of us, on a 'Great Trek' out of the myriads of caves of our respective origins. We are marching toward a better life, in quest of happiness, led by a great company of whites. Progress is steadily made through the constant technological cleverness of the whites, notwithstanding many interludes that see the whites killing each other as fast as their advanced weaponry will permit. (Those in the rear are almost as apt to be killing each other with their primitive tools.) Then, one day the sun rises on a humanity that has no whites (which virtually all social scientists see as coming to pass in the 21century). There is no more leadership, no further technological advance. There is a distinct, steady, universal and irreversible retreat toward the caves. Kemp has two big problems as I see it. First, his pronounced animus against Christianity is rooted in the gross excess of clericalism (I share his hostility on this point) and seems to forbid his granting credit for the progress of freedom nurtured by Protestant dissenters and their fellow travelers (like Jefferson). He exprsses minimal regard for the Pilgrim Fathers, and charges that Calvin executed people for violating a dress code. He uses Scriptures out of context and posits novel and impossible theories for the origins of the New Testament. I am tempted to conclude that his experiences in South Africa have colored his view of religion in an unrealistic manner (though in some cases most understandable -- such as the occasion when a Christian missionary named Owen failed to warn the 'Great Trek' of South Africa of impending massacre). That there are heroes, cowards, traitors and fools in every contingent of humans (of all races and religions) is a fact that all must accept and try not to use as the prism through which they see all of life. The second problem is much more complex: there is no solution to the situation as Kemp presents it -- and as I read Kemp. That a heterogeneous people cannot build or maintain a civilization is only half proven, since the world has just begun -- in my opinion. What our fast building American multi-culturalism is going to experience remains to be seen. (A lecturer, speaking at Calvin College and carried on C-Span this past week-end, said that America will cease to be a Nation and serve as a great revolving-door training-center for all the real homogeneous nation-states.) Those of us who desire to maintain the Protestant Christian culture we have always had are certainly concerned. The thing most evident from this thesis (to me) is that Kemp's wide grasp of history clearly demonstrates that tribalism has been the curse of history. It is tribalism among the white race that has reduced it from a majority world-wide to 15% today (30% as the beginning of the 20th century). Even our awful Civil War saw such noble characters as R. E. Lee making decisions costing the lives of hundreds of thousands of white men on tribalistic concepts such as "...the sacred soil of Virginia." And today, all around the globe, within racial groups, brothers are slaughtering brothers. Look at Iran and Iraq -- just a few years ago waging an unspeakably horrible conflict strictly on tribalistic grounds - over who is Muhammad's successor. The history of the white race as Kemp clearly presents it gives absolutely no indication that there can ever be any hope for white union for purpose of survival. My guess is that very few white people are eager to see the coming disappearance of the white race: but there seems to be an unsolvable quandary here. Preservation of a race requires a tribal dedication, but...there are too many sub-tribes. Kemp's revulsion at Christians (or any faith) converting through the sword should be shared by all. The days when Czars, Caesars and Kings chose the faith of their subjects should be buried forever. The democracy of the spirit, the sovereignty of the individual, universal sympathy and the unity of mankind in the unity of God through Christ is heart and soul of the Gospel. Whatever happens, the Christian task remains the same: the spirit of man -- all men. All said, I strongly urge the purchase and reading of Arthur Kemp's Europa: The History of The White Race. $18 CD ORDER |
